Merrell were founded in 1981, as a result of two ski company executives deciding to launch a new brand of hiking boots. The two executives recruited the services of R.J. Merrell, a heralded manufacturer of custom boots that were selling for around $500 a pair.
Their goal was to make a more competitively-priced boot that maintained the same levels of performance, the first of which was launched in 1983; three years later, the company had sold its 25,000th pair of boots. To this day, Merrell are celebrated for their range of quality, stylish, and durable footwear, apparel, and accessories.
